| Kajmanka dravá obývá rozsáhlou oblast mezi Kanadou,
Skalistými horami a Ekvádorem. Žije v bažinách, stojaté vodě, v jezírkách. Neplave
příliš dobře. Živí se hmyzem, rybami, žábami a jinými obojživelníky, ptáky, kraby, měkkýši,
malými hlodavci, neopatrně nastavenými prsty a trochu i vodními rostlinami.
Na jejich jídelníčku nechybí ani menší želvy včetně vlastního druhu.
| The common snapping turtle inhabits a huge area between
Canada, Rocky Mountains and Ecuador. This turtle live in swamps, quiet water and in
a muddy ponds. It does not swim well. Their food contains insects, fish, frogs and other amphibians,
birds, crabs, molluscs, minor rodents, careless fingers and a little of vegetable matter.
Their normal diet includes other turtles even of the same species.
| | Dospělé želvy dorůstají i přes 40 cm délky karapaxu a hmotnosti
až 40 kg. Rozdíly mezi pohlavími jsou minimální. Samice snáší okolo 25 vajec.
Mláďata se líhnou po 80 - 90 dnech, v nejsevernějších oblastech někdy rovnou přezimují
a vylezou až příští jaro. Vhodné akvaterárium má nižší hladinu vody a menší souš, přes léto
uvítají i jezírko, opět velmi mělké.
| Adult turtles can reach the length of carapace over 16 inches and
weight 80 lb. There is no great difference between sexes. The females lay about 25 eggs. Young
snappers hatch after 80 - 90 days. In northern areas they sometimes hibernate and come out the next
spring. Suitable aquaterarium has a small land area and relatively low depth, during the
summer they appreciate a shallow pond.

agressive animal, well deserving its vernacular name; when picked up or otherwise molested,
the animal's head is shot forward with incredible speed, while the mouth closes hard, often with
audible crunch, as the neck reaches its full extension. However, specimens of all sizes may
be handled quite safely by the long, thick tail, though it is important to hold the animal away
from one's legs. The 'snap' action is not just defensive; this predatory animal typically
stalks its prey with a slow-motion walking movement, then grabs it with the same eye-blurring strike".
