Želva pestrá je severoamerický druh, obývající rozsáhlé území mezi jižní Kanadou a severním Mexikem. Jejich přirozený domov ukazuje mapka. Patří k nejčastěji chovaným plazům vůbec. The painted turtles are North American turtles, found from southern Canada to northern Mexico. Their natural home shows a map. They belong to the most often kept reptiles all over.

Painted turtles are smaller than sliders, have a stage of development or middorsal stripe, though never have a keel. They are brightly marked, relatively smooth flat upper shell with red and yellow markings on a black or greenish brown background. The carapace is at average 5 - 6 inches long. The turtle jaw without teeth has tough, horny plates for gripping food. This turtle mature at about 7 for females and 3 for males. The female lays between 4 and 20 oval eggs in the early summer. In many areas they hibernate.
Neslyší příliš dobře, což si vynahrazují dobrým čichem a zrakem. Želvy obývají čerstvou, stojatou vodu, mělkou, s hustým rostlinstvem a bahnitým dnem. Živí se především rostlinami, hmyzem, menšími živočichy a občas i mršinami. Painted turtles like to bask in large groups on logs or fallen trees. The sunning helps rid them of parasits. Turtles dive quickly at the first sight of danger. Their sound perception is poor but the compensating is a good sense of smell and color vision. Painted turtles inhabit freshwater that is quiet, shallow, and thickly planted with a muddy bottom. Painted turtles feed mainly on plants, insects, smaller animals, and sometimes on carrion.
